World Malayalee Council Dubai Province proudly presents the Grand Onam Celebration 2025, marking the spirit of togetherness, tradition, and cultural pride. This year’s event is extra special as it coincides with the 30th Anniversary of the World Malayalee Council.

  • Contest is open to age group from 10 - 70 yrs

  • ⁠Each Team can have maximum of 5 members of different age group

  • ⁠No Entry fee.

  • ⁠Last date for registration will be 19th September -2025

  • Participants should bring all the necessary items for Participation in Pookalm contest including flowers

  • ⁠Participants should not mention their names or identity in the premises of Pookalam competition until the judging is over

  • ⁠Any message or concept criticizing religion , Politics or individual are strictly prohibited and such entries will be disqualified

  • ⁠Judgement will be based on artwork , color finishing and perfection

  • ⁠Pookalm should be arranged in its allotted place and within the size of the allotted area . Teams are not permitted to bring any ready made board or Pookalm

  • ⁠Participants are not allowed to mention any color codes on the board or Mat

  • Competition will start by 8:00 AM and completed by 10:30 AM

  • ⁠Place allotted will be based on the registration serial no on first come basis

  • ⁠Final Decision will be based on the Judges and arbitration will be decided by the organising committee

General Rules for Pookkalam

During the competition

  • Maximum participants in a team should not exceed more than 5 at a time. The presence of more than 5 people in the designated area will be grounds for disqualification. Additional members can assist their team from outside the designated area.

  • Members of the participating team are not permitted to assist other teams on completion of the designs during the course of the event. Breach of this clause will result in disqualification of both the teams.

  • Participants should bring natural flowers and leaves required for the competition.

  • Usage of artificially colored flowers/petals, coconut powder, salt, vegetables, fruits, and seeds is not allowed. Leafy vegetables such as Amaranthus dubius, cabbage, etc. are considered vegetables and hence cannot be used. You can use Cheera & Arya Veppila (Spinach Red/Green and Neem leaves).

  • Natural flowers, petals and leaves can be chopped or ground. Blended and/or as paste will call for disqualification.

  • Pre-fabricated or pre-molded elevations are not allowed. Any artificial elevations using clay or other such materials are not permitted.

  • Traditional Nilavilakku, Nirapara, Pookkula, Icons, Manchirathu or oil lamps are permitted outside the flower decoration area but are not a criterion for evaluation.

  • The premises should be vacated by 12 pm after cleaning up the allotted areas for the judges to assess the pookkalam.

  • Continuation of the decoration after the allotted time leads to disqualification.

After the competition

  • After the competition is completed, only one member (nominated by the team) should be available at all times near the area of the Pookkalam to answer any queries by the judges.

  • In case of a request from the judges/organizers, the team should be prepared to prove the authenticity of the material used in their Pookkalam.

  • The person available should be able to provide proper justification for the usage of any flower/item on the Pookkalam, if questioned by the judges. The team must keep a sample of the flower, petal or leaf used. Failure of proper justification might attract disqualification (Judges discretion).

  • Pookkalam must not be disturbed and should be left as it is for the public view even after the event. Props such as Traditional Nilavilakku, Nirapara, Pookkula, Icons, Manchirathu or oil lamps can be retrieved.

  • Any grievances regarding the competitions (other than the judgement) have to be raised by the teams in writing to the Pookkalam committee convener before 4.00 pm on the day of the competition.

  • The decision of the judging committee would be final and binding.

  • Violation of any rules will lead to immediate disqualification.
